Southwest Louisiana is experiencing an unprecedented industrial boom with billions of dollars of investments on the books. Among the needs listed by the prime contractors is trucking services. In 2015, Frank Clemons saw an opportunity to build his retirement by investing in a dump truck.

Frank worked with the LSBDC at McNeese to analyze the situation and prepare a realistic projection of the financial possibilities of his business idea. The spreadsheets showed a good likelihood of achieving a nice profit.

Frank had an excellent credit score and cash to invest but he found that truck distributors were wary of first-time buyers. After months of networking and negotiation, Frank found an almost-new vehicle that suited his standards and purchased a shiny red truck. He established F&S Trucking, L.L.C. and began pursuing work.

In addition to hiring a seasoned driver, Frank and his wife Selena also worked to get their Commercial Driver’s Licenses. They knew that if they got a contract to haul construction materials, dependability would be key to keeping the contract; having their CDLs meant that they could keep the truck running every day. The truck was in excellent condition which also contributed to dependability.

Frank quickly secured a contract to haul for a large contractor. The first year’s income matched the financial projections though expenses were a little higher than expected; the year was profitable. Developing the company proved to be a wise decision for Frank and Selena when his employer closed the local facility where Frank worked and the part-time trucking operation became full-time for the couple.

Weather affects work schedules but Frank has developed relationships with several brokers so the truck stays busy with various assignments. F&S Trucking is looking to expand with a second vehicle if the right deal can be found.
