The New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation (NORDF) announced the selection of Design Workshop to lead the Citywide Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The RFP selection committee met in a public meeting on July 19, 2022, at the Rosenwald Recreation Center and awarded the contract to Design Workshop based on the evaluation criteria in the RFP.

Design Workshop is an international design studio integrating landscape architecture, urban design, economics and engagement. They proposed to partner with seven firms to assist in the development of the master plan including ETM Associates, Eskew Dumez Ripple, Lord Cultural Resources, Bright Moments, Wingate Engineers, Alexandra Miller Consulting, and the Big SandBox.

New Orleans is one of six communities across the country to receive a $433,800 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The funding will be used to support the creation of a citywide parks and recreation master plan – a strategy to build an equitable and resilient park and recreation system accessible to all New Orleanians. The planning process will be led by the Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families (OYF) and the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC).

The planning process will gather feedback from a wide array of community-based organizations and residents to create action strategies to advance the city’s goals. The citywide parks and recreation master plan fulfills the commitment made by Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the four major park agencies – NORDC, Parks and Parkways, Audubon Nature Institute and City Park - as part of the 2019 parks and recreation millage proposal that passed with 76 percent voter approval. Residents interested in staying involved with the master plan process can email youthandfamilies@nola.gov.

“We look forward to working with Design Workshop, our park partners and the community to develop a citywide parks and recreation master plan that will build an equitable and resilient park and recreation system for all New Orleanians,” said NORD CEO Larry Barabino, Jr.

“Parks and Parkways looks forward to working with Design Workshop and all park partners to bring the City one step closer to achieving the goals set out in 2019 - to create and implement a workable and achievable citywide park and recreation master plan that improves greenspaces citywide, and thus the lives of all residents,” said Parks and Parkways Director Michael Karam.

“Design Workshop, Inc. exemplified proven experience and knowledge, both locally and nationally, in creating visionary plans for city park systems with community engagement at the center of the process,” said City Park CEO Cara Lambright. “As a park partner, we look forward to working collaboratively towards a sustainable plan to provide a high-quality system of parks, greenways, and recreation opportunities that will increase the quality of life for the residents of New Orleans.”

“We are excited at the opportunities this new project brings to New Orleans. We are fortunate these world-class designers are bringing their expertise to focus on the city, and the need for everyone to spend time enjoying nature,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “Not only will this work provide more access to beautiful green spaces throughout the community, but it also will generate new and inventive ways to utilize our historic parks for future generations to enjoy.”

"The NORD Foundation is excited that after a comprehensive search and deliberate selection process, the committee chose an experienced and qualified candidate,” said NORDF Board Chair Ernest Price. “We congratulate Design Workshop for being the successful bidder and we are grateful to all of the participants for their thoughtful submissions.”
